The title “Cuco” is a play on words. The Cuban convertible currency is called the CUC, and the piece vaguely resembles a 5 CUC coin (roughly $5) Cuco is the nickname one of Julio’s friends, who is humorously portrayed. Included among the objects on the piece are small photos of relatives. The back side sports a giant “5” emblematic of The Cuban 5 who were imprisoned in the U.S. for 15 years.
